Birds & Forests of Montreal

Walking trail in the Montreal Technopark Greenspace (B. Frei 2022)

As part of research funded by the Natural Climate Solutions Fund of Canada, we are undertaking research in urban forest of Montreal to look at the importance of these forests for migratory birds during the breeding season (summer) and during migration (spring). Starting in the summer of 2022 we are placing Autonomous Recording Units (ARUs) in forested areas across Montreal to record the diversity of birds using these spaces.
Most of us live near or in cities - about 4 out of every 5 Canadians. While we don't think about cities as being important places for solutions in our biodiversity and climate crisis - they are! Protecting, restoring and respecting our urban and peri-urban (i.e., near or beside urban areas) greenspaces is an important piece of the conservation puzzle. In addition, urban greenspaces and forests are very important for our mental, emotional and physical health - from providing shade on a hot day to being a place to relax and recreate.
